At what point should I give away all my Money?

Occasionally, I find myself day dreaming about becoming rich. Its a pleasant thought but some times I ask myself... "at what point will I have made enough money?" I think about it... and then I realize that there is no point at which I would be satisfied because I could always argue that if I made more money then I could do more good with it. I then justify my desire to become rich by convincing myself that when I make enough money, I will put it towards good causes. This then leads me to ask next, "at what point will I have enough money to start giving it away?"

If our goal is to ultimately give as big of a financial gift as possible to the world then it may be hard to see a point at which we will not be able to successfully make more money than we already have. We can always make more money, but I would argue that there does come a point at which a person cannot really keep on adding significantly to their fortunes.

The richest man in the world right now is Carlos Slim Helu, he is worth about 64 billion dollars. He is a billionaire because he owns one of the most successful communications companies in the world. For him to make more money than what he already has made, his company would have to expand to be much bigger than it already is or he would need to get involved in another business that millions of people would be willing to pay for. But building a successful company takes time and for it to really become a power house it can take much longer. Steve Jobs almost miraculously turned Apple into a profitable company but it took him almost ten years before it reached its current glory.

The likelihood of being able to bring more than one company to more than a billion dollar value is very low. first off your company needs to have a customer base big enough to allow you to expand to that kind of a size. A company that is contracted out to make air plan wings may be very successful, but it will not reach a very big customer base unless it starts making the rest of the plane and then some.

If you are wondering at what point you should give away your money I think it would be fair to say that we have the ability to give away some of it at any given point of our lives but if you're trying to reach a point at which you have expanded your fortune as much as possible. I think it would be safe to say if you hit 50 billion then there is a good chance you won't get much further no matter who you are. But if you own a company that makes airplane wings and are not looking to expand it anytime soon then I think the point at which you have reached your maximum earning capacity may come long before you become a billionaire.
